Foreign tourist arrivals to Turkey grew by 13.2% during the first quarter of 2024 to over 7 million tourists, while tourism revenues increased by 5.4% to $8.78 billion in the same period, according to data released today by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), adding that if Turkish citizens living abroad are included, more than 9 million people visited Turkey between January and March this year.
Iranians made up the largest group of non-Turkish tourists arriving in Turkey in the first three months of the year, with a total of 745,000 people from Iran visiting the country in that period; they were followed in second place by Germans with more than 680,000 arrivals, a 36% increase compared to the first quarter of last year. Third place was taken by Russians, with more than 682,000 tourist arrivals from Russia: a 12% less than in the same period of 2023.
Istanbul was the top favourite destination among foreign tourists travelling to Turkey in the first quarter of the year, being the choice for almost 54% of them; Antalya, on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, ranked second with nearly 860,000 tourists, while Edirne – close to the border with Greece and Bulgaria – ranked third with 833,000 arrivals. Average expenditure per tourist decreased slightly to USD 975 per capita; however, average expenditure per hotel night increased by 10.6% to USD 93.
