Turkey welcomed 56.7 million tourists in 2023, a 10.33% more than the previous year, according to data released today by Turkey’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, during an event at the Atatürk Cultural Centre in Istanbul where he also announced that tourism revenues reached a record high of more than 50 billion euros.
“The year 2023 has been a record-breaking year… The number of visitors reached 56.7 million in 2023,” the minister said during the presentation of the latest tourism data, highlighting tourist arrivals from Russia, Germany and the UK. Ersoy further stressed that these figures exceed pre-pandemic levels, after 2019 saw an all-time record with 45 million foreign tourists in Turkey.
Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, was also its top tourist destination welcoming 17.4 million foreign tourists in 2023; it was followed by Antalya – on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast – with 14.8 million tourists, Edirne – a city on the border between Bulgaria and Greece – with 4.7 million, and Muğla – on the Aegean Sea coast – with 3.3 million visitors. By nationality, Russians were the main group of foreign tourists with 6.3 million (up 20.7% on the previous year); they were followed by Germans (6.2 million, up 9%), British (3.8 million, up 12.8%), Bulgarians (2.9 million, up 0.4%) and Iranians (2.5 million, up 7.4% on 2022).
