Turkish Ministry of Trade has launched new regulations and more inspections that will affect all types of restaurants serving döner or İskender kebab as well as hamburgers whose main ingredient is meat, in order to improve the information consumers have about the products they buy and to control prices.
Turkish media reported that, according to the new ministerial regulation, restaurants will have to indicate the weight in grams next to the price of döner kebab, İskender kebab, meat burgers and similar dishes. In a statement, the Ministry of Trade recalled that in recent years these meals have been served under different prices, formats and portions, without consumers being able to compare the price of different dishes and establishments because they are not informed of the weight.
The ministry therefore considers that this new regulation is essential to protect consumers by clearly stating the weight in grams of the product along with its price, which will allow customers to easily compare between different restaurants and dishes. The new regulation also establishes a series of standard parameters as to when and how prices and weight should be indicated, as well as guidelines on how actions such as offers or discounts should be carried out.
In order to implement the new regulations, the authorities will intensify inspections in all 81 provinces of Turkey, which already started last Friday in several premises in some 27 districts of Istanbul, where inspectors checked whether the weight in grams is indeed already included next to the price of döner, İskender kebab and meat burgers.
İsmail Menteşe, the Istanbul provincial trade director, took part in the inspections and acknowledged that in recent days many consumers have also complained about the prices of water: ‘We have also examined them in the restaurants we have visited. We have taken the necessary actions, and we will continue with the inspections,’ he assured.
