Turkey welcomes the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon and is ready to contribute and mediate to reach a ceasefire in Gaza to end the bloodshed, Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan stressed on Wednesday after hours earlier US President Joe Biden named Turkey among the countries with which he will seek mediation to bring about a cessation of hostilities in the Strip.
‘We face a historic responsibility as wars rage in our region,’ Erdoğan, quoted by Turkish media, said in a speech to members of his AKP party at the Turkish parliament building in Ankara. ‘Turkey expects all parties to the conflict, especially Israel, to fulfil their responsibility to maintain calm on the ground,’ the Turkish president added, referring to the recent ceasefire announcement in Lebanon.
It was the United States, with the cooperation of France, that brokered a temporary cessation of hostilities in Lebanon after both Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a phased truce with an initial duration of 60 days. After announcing the agreement, Biden said he would also seek a ceasefire in Gaza mediated by Turkey, Qatar and Egypt.
‘Hamas now has to make a decision. Their only path is to release the hostages they are holding, including US citizens, and in the process end the fighting, which would make possible an increase in humanitarian aid,’ Biden said. ‘In the coming days, the United States will make another attempt with Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, Israel and others to reach a ceasefire in Gaza. With the hostages released and an end to the war without Hamas in power, that is possible,’ he said.
