Turkey will start requiring a new transit visa for travellers on flights to Latin America making a stopover in Istanbul. The measure, which will come into effect from 15 April, will affect passengers in transit to four South American countries: Mexico, Panama, Colombia and Venezuela, who will have to obtain the new electronic transit visa from that date.
The measure will affect for now only passengers in transit to these four Latin American countries who are at the same time citizens of India, Nepal, Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Chad, Somalia, Cameroon, Mauritania and Yemen, and responds to the detection by the Turkish authorities of an increase in irregular immigration to the United States from several Latin American countries through Turkey, which has led to increased security and inspections in places like Istanbul Airport.
In this regard, Turkey’s state-owned airline Turkish Airlines has already alerted passengers on flights to Latin America that they may be subject to additional checks and searches at the airport. The new transit visa will be available free of charge via the Turkish foreign ministry’s website, for which travellers will need to provide information about their personal data, tickets numbers or accommodation at destination. For passengers in transit through Istanbul Airport who are required to obtain the new visa, a printed copy of the visa must be presented.
