Turkish Minister of the Environment, Urban Planning and Climate Change, Murat Kurum, has announced the construction of two new satellite cities in Istanbul to relocate part of the population that will be displaced to other areas of the Turkish metropolis because their current buildings are not prepared for an earthquake. Kurum explained that 500,000 of the 1.5 million non-earthquake resistant houses will be rebuilt in the same area with earthquake-reinforced structure, while one million will be rebuilt “without adding additional population to Istanbul” in two satellite cities that will be in Asia and Europe, respectively, in order to reduce the density of buildings and create more green spaces in the original areas. “We will move our citizens step by step, always with their consent,” he said.
