Up to 70% of the currently existing buildings in Istanbul are not earthquake resistant, and some 90,000 should be demolished and built anew, according to Okan Tüysüz, a geoscientist at Istanbul Technical University. “The first rule in an earthquake is to reduce the risk. If only one person lived in each of these buildings, 90,000 lives would be saved by this measure,” he noted. Another expert, Hüseyin Alan, warns that 24 cities in Turkey are built on fault lines, something that should be prohibited by law, just like construction in riverbeds or in tsunami risk areas. “In Istanbul there are even tsunami warning signs… But in those risk areas, there are buildings that shouldn’t be there,” he added.
