Istanbul city council has started putting up warning signs showing the evacuation route (tahliye yolu, in Turkish) in the event of a tsunami following a major earthquake in the city. Early warning systems for a possible tsunami have also been installed in some districts such as Büyükçekmece. Tsunami and earthquake expert Professor Şükrü Ersoy explains that the districts of Büyükçekmece, Küçükçekmece, Bakırköy, Ataköy, Zeytinburnu and Topkapı would be the most affected in the event of a tsunami. A recent report from the Turkish parliament warned of the risk of a tsunami in Istanbul, where waves would take 10 minutes to reach the coast with a height of 5 to 10 metres, penetrating 150 metres inland.
