The Sarıyer district council in Istanbul has announced plans to build a statue in honor of Proteo, the Mexican rescue dog who died during search efforts after the earthquakes in Turkey. “Proteo came from Mexico, thousands of kilometers away, and he came to rescue our citizens from under the rubble… in this land that he did not know. And he was successful,” declared Şükru Genç, the mayor of Sarıyer. “Proteo is now one of the names to which we owe our loyalty. We want to have the statue of him in our park,” he added. The statue will likely be erected in Miyazaki Atsushi Park, named after a Japanese volunteer who died during rescue efforts after the 2011 Van earthquake.
Proteo passed away in Adıyaman on February 12, apparently from the harsh winter conditions in Turkey; before his death, he managed to rescue a child alive and recover the bodies of 14 other people buried in the rubble. A rehabilitation center for stray animals in Başiskele, a district in Turkey’s Kocaeli province, has also been named after Proteo.
