Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan attended the 44th Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit on the second day of his visit to Qatar, which brought together leading Muslim countries in the region and where Erdoğan urged to unite efforts to stop Israel’s war in Gaza, warning of the risk of the conflict to spread across the Middle East region, while accusing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of “endangering the security and future of our entire region to prolong his political life“.
“Israel’s war crimes, crimes against humanity in Gaza, must not go unpunished,” Erdoğan said during the summit in Doha. “Our priority is an immediate declaration of a lasting ceasefire, and for the flow of humanitarian aid to continue,” insisted the Turkish leader, who stressed that there is a real risk that the conflict in Gaza could turn into a regional war involving countries such as Lebanon or Syria.
“It is a war crime that more than 17,000 Palestinians, mostly children and women, have been killed,” said Erdoğan, who highlighted the humanitarian aid sent by Turkey to Gaza, which has so far involved sending 12 planes and two ships loaded with humanitarian aid to Egypt, where Gaza has its only land crossing through Rafah. Turkey has also airlifted injured Palestinian children and cancer patients from Gaza so that they could receive treatment in Turkish hospitals.
Erdoğan lamented the end of the truce – which Turkey had hoped to turn into a permanent ceasefire – and again denounced Israel’s crimes in Gaza, while reiterating the need to push for a two-state solution to end the tensions in the Middle East: “Recent developments have shown us the importance of establishing a sovereign and independent Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital. Turkey is ready to assume its responsibility on this issue, together with other countries in the region, through the guarantee model we have proposed“.
