Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan referred to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as “the butcher of Gaza” during a speech on Wednesday to deputies of his AKP party in Ankara, accusing the Israeli leader of “committing one of the greatest atrocities in Gaza“. Erdoğan, who noted that in the wake of the Israeli government’s latest statements he had given up hope that the current ceasefire could be turned into a lasting truce, further asserted that Netanyahu’s actions are giving wings to anti-Semitism and endangering Jews around the world, and reiterated Turkey’s intention to take Israel to the ICC for war crimes.
“(Palestinians) have been subjected since 7 October to the most atrocious attacks in human history. Their mosques are bombed, their schools razed to the ground, refugee camps are deliberately targeted, children are brutally massacred,” lamented the Turkish president, who did not hesitate to refer to what happened in Gaza as a genocide against 2 million Palestinians “confined in an open-air prison, without access to food, electricity or water”.
“More than 16,000 of our brothers and sisters in Gaza have been martyred (killed), and more than 70% of them are women and children. More than 35,000 Palestinians have been injured. We remember every one of those martyrs, and we hope that the wounded can recover soon,” Erdoğan said, also recalling that 2 out of 3 buildings in Gaza have been destroyed or severely damaged, and that the health infrastructure is collapsed.
“Netanyahu is already remembered as the butcher of Gaza. This is a shame with which he will be associated, but all those who staunchly support him will also be remembered for this shame. It is something that will not be forgotten. We will never forget the lack of reaction of the Western countries to the crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in Gaza, with a few exceptions,” stressed Erdoğan, who in this regard referred specifically to Spain’s “principled stance” for denouncing Israel’s atrocities. “We will resort to all options to bring the Israeli government to trial before international courts, in the name of humanity,” he added.
