Fenerbahçe beats Sivasspor to stay on top of the league

Fenerbahçe beat Sivasspor in the final match of the 14th round of the Turkish Premier League yesterday afternoon at the Ülker Stadium in Istanbul, with the Yellow Canaries needing a win to stay top after their main rival Galatasaray, with whom they are levelled on points, beat Pendikspor on Saturday taking three precious points and temporarily moving to the top of the standings.

The first goal came after 16 minutes from Sebastian Szymanski: the Pole stretched his leg out to meet a cross into the box that caught out Vural, the Sivas’ goalkeeper. Shortly before the break, İrfan Kahveci scored a beautifully struck goal in the 41st minute with a beautiful lob that went just inside the post, after masterfully beating the entire Sivas defence. Rey Manaj pulled one back early in the second half, making the Anatolian team’s only goal of the game; but a 68th-minute own goal by Vural as he tried to clear the ball sank Sivaspor’s morale, and a goal by Bosnian Edin Džeko in the 75th minute, completed Fenerbahçe’s rout to stay top of the league for another week.
