Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan arrived in Qatar on Monday on an important two-day official visit at the invitation of Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, with economic relations between the two allied countries as one of the main points on the agenda, but also seeking a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, given that the Doha government is precisely one of the mediators in the conflict between Hamas and Israel.
The Turkish leader’s visit coincides with the 9th meeting of the High Strategic Commission between Qatar and Turkey, to be held on Monday, where the two countries will discuss all aspects of their bilateral relations and how to deepen them. The trade volume between the two countries grew by 17% in 2022 to $2.2 billion, and investments by Qatari companies in Turkey exceeds $33 billion.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, Erdoğan is scheduled to attend in Doha the 44th summit of the Gulf Cooperation Council, which brings together Qatar, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Kuwait, and of which Turkey is not a member but a “strategic dialogue” partner. There, the Turkish president will use his stay in Qatar to push for a definitive ceasefire in Gaza with the support of the countries of the region.
Hours before his trip to Qatar, during a meeting in Istanbul of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Erdoğan pledged that Turkey “will not leave a single inch of Gaza land to Israel”, and insisted that the Muslim world has a responsibility “not to cede a single part of Gaza to the Israeli occupation forces”.
