Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will pay a surprise visit to Turkey tomorrow, Friday, where he plans to meet with Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan at a key moment in the war with Russia, which recently successfully launched a new ground offensive on the enclave of Avdiivka amid concerns in the ranks of the Ukrainian army over the lack of ammunition and relief for soldiers.
As reported via the social network X by the Communications Office of the President of the Turkish Republic, Zelenskyy and Erdoğan will address several issues during their meeting, including the resumption of the grain deal, the situation of the Crimean Tatar minority, or the bilateral relations between Ankara and Kiev.
The two are also expected to discuss the recent 10-point peace plan proposed by Zelenskyy, which includes an unlikely exit of all Russian forces from Ukrainian territory. Although since the beginning of the conflict the Turkish government has always defended Ukraine’s territorial integrity and condemned the Russian invasion, Turkey has maintained an equidistant position due to its good relations with both countries, which has allowed it to promote initiatives such as the so-called grain deal, as well as others including the release of prisoners of war.
The announcement of Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s surprise visit to Ukraine comes after British Defence Minister Grant Shapps met with the Ukrainian president in Kiev on Thursday, with whom he discussed the current situation of the Ukrainian army and its most urgent needs. The UK has recently pledged to supply Ukraine with more than 10,000 drones, a technology that the Ukrainian military considers key to improving its war-fighting capabilities against Russia and in which Turkey has also been a key ally, including a project to build a manufacturing plant in Ukraine to produce the famous Bayraktar drones.
