Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said yesterday on his return from an official visit to Hungary that he will urge Putin to resume the Ukraine-Russia grain deal at an upcoming meeting with the Russian president. “We need to reopen the grain corridor. We need to make sure that African countries in need get what they need,” Erdoğan told reporters on board the presidential plane.
“I will soon have a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and I will tell him ‘Let’s do everything possible to operate the grain corridor.’ I am confident that we can get positive answers from him,” said the Turkish leader, who expressed confidence that the Russian leader would accept his proposal.
During his visit to Sochi in early September, Erdoğan already tried to convince Putin of a joint plan with Qatar to help African countries that would involve shipping one million tonnes of Russian wheat to African nations: Qatar would provide financial support for the operation, while Turkey would process the grain into flour prior to shipment. The grain deal reached in July 2022 with the mediation of Turkey and the UN allowed Ukraine to export thousands of tonnes of grain across the Black Sea; however, a year later Russia decided to cancel it in protest at sanctions against the Kremlin.
