Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan spoke by phone with his Turkish counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky coinciding with the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. During the conversation, Erdoğan thanked his Ukrainian counterpart for the help sent by Kiev to Turkey after the devastating earthquakes in southeastern Anatolia, while recalling that Ankara is maintaining its diplomatic efforts to mediate in the conflict and try to reach a ceasefire and a negotiated solution. Turkey, which maintained good relations with both Russia and Ukraine before the war, defends Ukrainian territorial integrity and condemned the Russian invasion from the very beginning; however, Ankara has not imposed sanctions against Moscow and has opted for a neutral and mediation role.
