Kremlin sources confirmed on Tuesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin has already begun preparations for his long-awaited visit to Turkey, which Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan had initially planned for last year, in what will be one of Putin’s rare foreign trips since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed to journalists in Moscow that “high-level contacts between Russia and Turkey are planned” and that the Russian government will announce the day of the visit “as soon as the two leaders agree on the date“.
Just a few days ago, Turkish media reported that Putin’s visit to Turkey could take place in mid-February, following a similar visit by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in the coming days. The last meeting between Putin and Erdoğan took place last September in the Russian city of Sochi, and focused on the resumption of the vital grain deal.
