Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan assured on Monday during a live video conference call with Turkey’s first astronaut, Alper Gezeravcı, from the International Space Station (ISS) that “you will not be the last”, underlining the “historic” milestone represented by this mission, which Erdoğan said he hopes would inspire new generations.
“I have been able to adapt quickly to the environment on the ISS, and I am continuing my work as planned,” said Gezeravcı, a former fighter pilot and captain of Turkish Airlines. “You have become our first astronaut, but not our last,” Erdoğan replied. “Maybe many of our children will be inspired to enter this field and follow in your footsteps,” he added.
Gezeravcı will spend two weeks on the International Space Station conducting around 30 experiments for various universities and scientific centres in Turkey, mainly related to microgravity and spaceflight, human health or industry. Sending Turkey’s first astronaut into space is part of Turkey’s new space program, which includes the development of its own space rockets and propulsion systems and missions to the Moon.
