Coinciding with the declaration by the Turkish Ministry of Tourism and Culture of 2020 as the Year of Patara, an ancient Roman city where Saint Nicolas was born, restoration works have begun under the supervision of archaeologists to restore its former glory to the historic city gate, built 2,000 years ago under the reign of Emperors Claudius, Nero, and Vespasian. It is a unique door in the entire Roman world, since in addition to being such it also served to transport water.
