Russia and Ukraine signed in Istanbul an agreement with Turkey and the UN on Friday to export grain and fertilizers freely through Black Sea ports, in a bid to ease the threat of global famine and curb escalating global inflation due to the increase in the price of food, which in the poorest countries has tripled. “This agreement will save millions of people from famine, and will alleviate world food inflation,” said Turkish President Erdoğan, who hoped that this would be a step towards the end of a war “that affects all of humanity.” The pact will allow millions of tons of grain and other agricultural products to be exported from the Ukrainian ports of Odessa, Chornomorsk and Yuzhne, under the supervision of a coordination center established in Istanbul. “It will relieve the poorest countries on the brink of bankruptcy, and the most vulnerable people on the brink of starvation,” Guterres stressed, thanking Turkey for its mediation efforts.
