Turkish archaeologists have unearthed the heads of statues of two ancient Greek gods during excavations in the ruins of Aizanoi, located in western Turkey and nicknamed the “second Ephesus.” The remains are from a statue of the goddess of love, Aphrodite, and the god of wine, Dionysus, and correspond to the body of two other statues discovered long ago. Experts point to the significance of this discovery at Aizanoi (whose ruins are candidates for World Heritage Site), which reveals that ancient Greek gods continued to be venerated in the region even after the Roman conquest.
