The snowfall that began falling on Istanbul in the early hours of Monday morning continued intermittently throughout this morning, with the snow being particularly heavy on the higher ground on both the European and Asian sides of the city, where rooftops and vehicles dawned completely covered in white.
Following snowfall in Sultangazi – on the outskirts of the European side of Istanbul – and on Çamlıca Hill – on the Asian side -, the ground was covered in white. The snowfall was also felt in districts such as Fatih, Bayrampaşa, Sancaktepe, Çekmeköy, Esenyurt or Avcılar, where many locals took the opportunity to play with snowballs.
According to the forecasts of the General Directorate of Meteorology, the whole of Turkey will remain very cloudy. Intermittent showers are expected in the Marmara and eastern Aegean regions, as well as in the Mediterranean, Central Anatolia, the Black Sea, eastern and southeastern Anatolia, daily Hürriyet reported. Rain and showers will particularly affect the Mediterranean coast, the central and eastern Black Sea and southeastern Anatolia. Elsewhere, a combination of rain and snow is expected, as well as further snowfall.
Precipitation could be locally heavy on the central and eastern coast of the Black Sea region, especially in the provinces of Tokat and Sinop, as well as in eastern Central Anatolia and large areas of eastern and southeastern Türkiye. Frost and ice are also expected overnight and in the early hours of the day in the Marmara region and in the inland and eastern regions of the country. Authorities are also warning of the risk of avalanches in mountainous areas in the eastern Black Sea hinterland, as well as in areas with heavy snow accumulation in eastern Anatolia.
Although the cold and overnight snowfall of the last few hours did not cause serious incidents in the central districts of Istanbul, where the snow barely set, the higher areas – especially in the north of the city – were covered by a white blanket. In Beykoz, in the Asian part of the city, the snowy landscape offered spectacular images captured from the air with a drone.
