The Spanish Navy amphibious assault ship Juan Carlos I (L-61), whose design inspired the construction of the first Turkish aircraft carrier, the TCG Anadolu, remains anchored this week in the port of Sarayburnu in Istanbul, according to numerous media reports in Turkey, where it has attracted the attention of many onlookers.
The aircraft carrier is 231 metres long and has a beam of 32 metres, displacing 26,000 tonnes and a crew of around 240. The presence of the Juan Carlos I (L-61) has aroused great interest in the Turkish media, which has highlighted the fact that this vessel belongs to the same class as the TCG Anadolu and that it remains anchored in the port of Sarayburnu with several helicopters and “Harrier” type jet fighters visible on its deck.
Considered the largest assault ship of the Spanish Navy, the presence of the Spanish vessel Juan Carlos I in Istanbul is part of the deployment of the Expeditionary Group “Daedalus-24” as part of NATO’s “Sea Guardian” operation of deterrence and maritime reinforcement in the Mediterranean Sea.
