75 people were killed in road accidents across Turkey during the nine-day long holidays that began on 6 April to mark the end of Ramadan, according to official figures released by Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.
During the holiday, which officially began on April 10th but which many Turks brought forward to include the previous weekend, millions of people took to the road leaving major cities such as Istanbul to visit their families in their home provinces, or simply to spend a few days resting in the large tourist resorts on the Aegean or Mediterranean coasts.
According to data provided by the minister during a press conference in Ankara yesterday, a total of 6,530 accidents were recorded on Turkish roads between 6 and 14 April, 37% of which were caused by speeding, the most important cause of accidents during the long holidays; other causes of accidents were due to failure to yield, improper lane changes, collisions between vehicles due to not respecting the safety distance, or improper turns, the minister explained.
