Unemployment in Turkey rises slightly to 9.1%

The unemployment rate in Turkey rose slightly in January to 9.1%, 0.2 percentage points higher than in the previous month (December), according to the latest report published by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), which shows an increase of 85,000 more unemployed people to bring the total number of unemployed in the Eurasian country to 3.12 million.

By gender, the unemployment rate reached 7.7% among men and 11.7% among women. Youth unemployment (for the 15-24 age group) rose to 16.6%, with 14.1% among young men and 21.1% among young women.

While unemployment in Turkey rose in January, so did the employment rate, which reached 49% in the first month of the year after a 48.8% in December. In total, 32.2 million people were employed in Turkey in January out of 65.7 million in working age, with the labour force participation rate standing at 53.9%.
