Turkey’s unemployment rate continued to fall to 8.4% in May – 7% among men and 11% among women – according to the latest data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), marking a 0.1 point drop from April’s unemployment level and the lowest level of unemployment in Turkey in 12 years.
According to data from the report presented on Wednesday by the Turkish statistics agency, the number of unemployed people aged 15 and over in Turkey fell by 27,000 in May to 3,000,011, while the number of employed people rose by 273,000 compared to April to 32,920,000 in May.
Thus, TÜİK indicates that the employment rate in Turkey rose by 0.4 points to 50%, with 67.3% among men and 33% among women. Meanwhile, the youth unemployment rate (corresponding to the 15-24 age group) increased by 0.3 points from the previous month to 15.0%, being 12.8% among men and 19.3% among women.
Turkey’s unemployment data for May are the lowest recorded since November 2012. Referring to the latest unemployment figures released by TÜİK, Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz further highlighted the labour force figure, which is “an important indicator of our economy’s potential” and reached 54.5% in May, which he described as “a historic achievement“. “Our economy continues to generate employment thanks to the policies we have implemented during the disinflation process,” Yılmaz said.
