With thermometers reaching temperatures over 30 degrees Celsius, Istanbul’s beaches have been packed in recent days with locals and tourists trying to escape from heat, flocking to places like Yeşilköy beach – on the city’s European coast – from the early hours of the morning.
“What are people going to do at home? When it’s hot everybody comes, and they do well. They come at 8 o’clock in the morning and stay here until the sun goes down. At weekends it gets crowded,” Hakan Dinçer, a resident of Yeşilköy, told the DHA news agency. “It’s quiet now, on weekends the beach is full of people,” said Kemalettin Gurbanov, a native of Azerbaijan, who came to the place with two children.
Çetin Ramazan, a 77-year-old local, highlighted the cleanliness of this beach of Istanbul: “I come here to swim and have a good time. They clean the beach, they maintain it, there are police… There is a lot of security. It’s a nice and free place for families to enjoy”. Adan Velisoy, from Iraq, highlighted the beauty of the place: “This is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen in my life. I can’t find in my country the peace I find here. May God bless this country. It’s a very clean place, made for the people… It’s a very beautiful thing,” he said.
