A total of 166 women have died from gender-based violence in Turkey in the first 6 months of 2024, according to official data released by Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya before a committee of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (parliament).
“Sadly, 308 women lost their lives in 2023 due to violence. In the first six months of 2024, unfortunately 166 women have succumbed to the same fate,” Yerlikaya said yesterday during an appearance before the Turkish parliament’s gender equality committee, media reported. “We have never and will never accept any form of violence, especially against women. Even one case is too many and totally unacceptable. We strongly support all efforts and initiatives aimed at solving this serious problem,” the minister added.
Yerlikaya also provided information on initiatives launched in Turkey to combat domestic violence and violence against women, highlighting the introduction of electronic bracelets as one of the measures that has proven to be most effective in preventing high-risk cases of gender-based violence. In 2023, the number of available electronic bracelets increased by 50% to 1,500; and as of 1 July, 689 people were under surveillance through these devices.
The number of police and gendarmerie units dedicated to combat cases of gender-based violence has also increased to 1,287, the minister added, also recalling the success of the KADES app, which allows women to report cases of abuse and assault directly to the police and inform about their position, and which has received 1.2 million reports since it was launched in 2018.
