Hundreds of women gathered late on March 8 near Istanbul’s Cihangir Park after Turkish police banned International Women’s Day demonstrations in the city’s iconic Taksim Square. During the protest, called in defense of women’s rights, a minute of silence was observed to remember the victims of the recent earthquakes in Turkey and numerous chants of “government resignation” were heard, while the names of the women murdered by gender violence were shouted.
After the rally, a group of protesters insisted on going to Taksim, where there was a confrontation with the police who cordoned off the square, during which police fired tear gas. According to Turkish press, many women were arrested and taken to police station.
