The family of the woman who was murdered in the middle of the street by her ex-husband over the weekend in Istanbul have spoken to the media, claiming that the entire murder was planned and calling for justice for the victim, who was buried yesterday, Sunday, amid tears from her relatives and leaves behind four children.
The incident took place at 13:30 on Saturday on Eslem Street in the Taşoluk neighbourhood on the outskirts of Istanbul’s Arnavutköy district; Serpil Gül, 35, was shot several times in the head as she tried to flee from her ex-husband, Harun Gül, with whom she had been in divorce proceedings for two years. The killer, who reportedly tried to commit suicide with the same weapon, was later arrested by the police, who had to fire several shots in the air to prevent him from being lynched by neighbours who had witnessed the crime.
A funeral ceremony was held on Sunday at the Abdurrahman Gazi Mosque in Sultanbeyli, from where Serpil’s body was taken for burial to the nearby Teferrüç cemetery. Speaking to the Turkish news agency DHA, Cihan Yılmaz, the victim’s older brother, said the whole crime was planned in advance. “They had been separated for three years. He cheated her, he told her ‘Come, the child is going to be circumcised, come to the ceremony’. You separated peacefully, that’s it. But no, he planned the whole thing,” he said.
“In the video you can see that he hits her and shoots her 3 times in the head. There are two people behind him and another person in front. It is something planned”, Yılmaz insisted. “Serpil leaves 4 children behind. When I went to the police station, the children shouted ‘Uncle, uncle!’ The police and the people in charge of the orphanage wouldn’t let me go near them. They thought I might commit a crime, like their father,” said the woman’s brother.
“Our pain is very great,” said Bülent Durgun, another relative of the victim. “As far as I know, they want to give this man a five-year sentence. Our country is strong, and I trust that the necessary punishment will be given to such criminals. This is our wish,” Durgun stressed. “We are in 2024, and we still see this brutality. It doesn’t matter why, what matters is that an innocent and defenceless woman has been brutally murdered. I ask my dear President (Erdoğan) to look into this matter. This is my request. Other Serpils should not die young,” he concluded.
