Nearly 8 million women have already downloaded an official app designed to combat gender-based violence and fight femicides, helping in 920,000 cases of assaults and harassment against women.
The app, called KADES (Turkish acronym for ‘Support for Women’) and launched in March 2018, allows its users to issue emergency alerts and warnings to security forces by simply touching a button, which immediately sends the police the phone’s location. The app, which has already been downloaded by 7.83 million women and is available in 11 languages, has recently been updated to better help deaf people, and will soon receive further improvements.
Speaking to Turkish daily Hürriyet, the deputy commissioner of the General Directorate of Security (Turkey’s national police), Vesile Kaplan, explained that so far more than 1.47 million complaints have been filed thanks to the app: ‘Violence can come when we least expect it and from whom we least expect it… Hopefully no one will have to use the app, but it is vital to be prepared,’ she said.
Kaplan emphasised that an app against gender-based violence like KADES – which is available for download from all major online platforms – not only serves to help the user, but also family members, neighbours or even strangers. ‘It is very important and valuable for us to be able to influence the life of a single woman and prevent any possible violent incidents,’ she said.
