Gökçe Kübra Yıldırım will go down in the history books for becoming the first Turkish woman to fly the world’s largest passenger plane, the Airbus A380, as the pilot herself announced a few days ago on social media.
With a capacity to carry up to 853 passengers, the A380 is a four-engine aircraft manufactured by the European consortium Airbus and is considered the largest passenger aircraft ever built, as it is the first – and so far – only jet aircraft to have two decks along the entire length of its fuselage, unlike the Boeing 747 which also has an upper deck but only on the front part.
According to the Anatolia news agency, Yıldırım has become captain of an A380 after serving as first officer for several years at a Dubai airline. She began her career in aviation years ago with an internship in the aircraft maintenance division of Turkish Airlines, THY Teknik, and after completing her training, she joined the Turkish Airlines Airbus fleet as first officer.
A few days ago, Yıldırım announced on her social networks that she had finally been appointed captain and would be piloting the world’s largest aeroplane: ‘This journey, which I began almost 12 years ago, has now taken me to the captain’s seat. Every step, every challenge and every achievement has shaped me. This profession is not just a job, it is part of my life. I am deeply grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way. Now, I am officially captain of an Airbus A380.’
