A Boeing 737-800 (B738) suffered a landing gear wheel blowout while landing Thursday at Alanya-Gazipaşa Airport in Turkey’s southern Antalya province, the second Boeing aircraft accident in just over 24 hours, after another US carrier’s plane had to make an emergency landing at Istanbul Airport yesterday after the front landing gear failed to deploy.
The aircraft, operated by Turkish carrier Corendon Airlines, was on the last leg of a flight from Germany with 184 passengers and six crew on board when it was about to land at the airport outside the resort town of Alanya at around 10:45 a.m. local time (9:45 CET). During the landing manoeuvre, one of the front landing gear tyres burst after touching down on the runway, the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure said in a statement.
Despite the incident, the pilots were able to land the plane safely and all 190 occupants of the aircraft were evacuated safely. Turkish authorities reported that there were no injuries to passengers or damage to the runway, although several flights had to be diverted to nearby Antalya airport until the aircraft could be removed from the runway, once technical inspection was completed. The aircraft’s front landing gear was severely damaged during the manoeuvre and rendered completely inoperable.
This is the second accident involving an American Boeing aircraft in Turkey in just over a day, after another Boeing 767 belonging to the cargo airline FedEx Express suffered a mechanical failure that prevented it from deploying its front landing gear. The aircraft was eventually able to land thanks to the skill of the pilots, but the incident put the spotlight back on safety failures at Boeing, which has come under fire since the January cabin depressurisation of a 737 Max in mid-flight when it suddenly lost part of its fuselage.
