Turkey woke up this morning in shock to the heinous murder committed by a father, in the process of divorce, who killed three of his young daughters and seriously injured another before attempting suicide, in an event that has shocked the whole of Altındağ, a densely populated neighbourhood in the Bornova district, just outside the Turkish city of Izmir.
Turkish media reported that the killer, 45-year-old Vesim Şimşek, a resident of Altındağ, drove his four daughters – Hiranur, Cemre, Ceylin and Nira – to a plot of land he owned, where he shot them with a pistol. After committing the massacre, the man phoned a relative and informed him of his location, telling him that he had shot his daughters and was going to take his own life. After the conversation ended, he then attempted suicide with the same weapon.
Once the emergency services were alerted, several ambulances and police vehicles were immediately dispatched to the crime scene, where medical teams could only confirm the death of 4-year-old Cemre, 2-year-old Ceylin and 14-year-old Nira. A fourth girl, 11-year-old Hira, was seriously injured and was immediately taken to hospital along with the killer, who was injured but did not take his own life.
The bodies of the deceased girls have been taken to the Institute of Forensic Medicine of Izmir for autopsy. While the investigation is still ongoing, several channels in Turkey reported that the girls’ father, who worked in construction, was in divorce proceedings from his wife, who had broken off the relationship with him due to his psychological problems. ‘He was a father who really cared for his daughters. I am devastated, there are no words to express what I feel,’ a family member told the media, saying that no one could have expected this fatal outcome.
