Turkish security forces continue their unsuccessful search for the 8-year-old girl who went missing a week ago in Diyarbakır, in south-eastern Turkey, as all questions remain open and the child’s whereabouts remain a complete mystery, compounded by the absence of clear clues.
The incident occurred on 21 August after midday, when eight-year-old Narin Güran failed to return home after attending a course. Initially, it was the family itself who began to search for the child with the help of several neighbours in the village, but when they were unable to find her, her father finally reported her disappearance to the gendarmerie at around 8 p.m.
The search has been incessant since then and has mobilised not only gendarmerie units but also police, diving teams and canine units, while nearly 130 people have been questioned for their possible connection to the case and more than 12,000 vehicles – including some 150 that passed through the area where the girl is believed to have disappeared – have been searched; also, dozens of houses in the area have been inspected, according to Turkish media reports.
The case has attracted huge public interest in Turkey, with television stations broadcasting CCTV footage showing Narin at around 3.15pm on 21 August – the day of her disappearance – walking with four friends, before separating from them and taking a path towards her home, at which point nobody saw her again. On 25 August the police, with the help of two of Narin’s friends and under the supervision of a child psychologist, carried out a reconstruction of precisely that moment when the child was separated from the group, so that her friends could remember the exact place and time when they last saw the minor.
No clues about the child’s whereabouts
During an initial search the day after her disappearance, a child’s slipper was found by the roadside about 3 km away from Narin’s home, but after some hesitation the parents finally confirmed that it did not belong to the missing girl. A similar thing has happened with some blood stains found on the roadside, which after DNA analysis were found not to belong to Narin.
In recent days, the search has focused on an irrigation canal (which had to be drained of water for the investigation) which teams searched from the neighbourhood where Narin lives to a distance of 20 km. In total, almost 4,500 hectares of land have been searched for the missing girl, with no further clues as to Narin’s whereabouts or the reason for her disappearance, which is keeping the whole of Turkey in shock.
