Hundreds of people continue to visit the grave of Narin Güran, the 8-year-old girl who went missing on 21 August and was found on 8 September in a river after being killed in a crime that has shocked the whole of Turkey and whose investigation continues after eight people, including the girl’s mother and older brother, were sent to prison yesterday awaiting trial (one of them was released on probation because he was a minor).
Many of the people who come to visit Narin’s small grave in the local cemetery in Tavşantepe, her hometown in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır, are neighbours from other nearby villages; but people also come from other provinces, such as Şehmus, a man who travelled from Mardin province after travelling almost 200 km and who told the İHA agency that he had no words to describe what happened.
‘We want the sentences to be as harsh as possible,’ he said. ‘We all have children. What crime did this girl commit?’ wondered Şehmus, who travelled with his wife and daughter to Narin’s grave, now covered with flowers, dresses, stuffed animals and toys, and all kinds of messages for the deceased girl, some of them very touching.
Şindar, another woman who like many others has travelled from far to pray at Narin’s grave, feels also moved by the tragedy: ‘The pain of losing a child is very great. God forbid that anyone should suffer such an ordeal. We are very sad for our child Narin, what has happened is an atrocity,’ she said.
Narin’s father speaks
Narin Güran’s father, Arif Güran, made a brief statement to the press after the arrest of several members of the family, including his wife Yüksel Güran and one of his sons and Narin’s older brother, 18-year-old Enes Güran. Faced with journalists and visibly exhausted, Arif said he had confidence in justice and in the work of investigators and the prosecutor’s office, whom he repeatedly thanked, and denied having been detained by the gendarmerie, while criticising the false rumours that had circulated about him on social media claiming that he had not gone to his daughter’s grave.
While declining to comment on the ongoing investigation into the murder of his daughter Narin, Arif did refer to Nevzat Bahtiyar, the individual who has confessed to hiding the girl’s body in a river near the village after receiving a large sum of money from Narin’s uncle and Arif’s brother, Salim Güran.
‘This person is someone who used to sit next to me in the mosque every evening. He has given four or five contradictory statements. That is the job of our prosecutors. My statements have always been the same,’ Narin Güran’s father said. ‘The state can take whoever it wants, me too. The state will solve this, they will not allow my daughter’s blood to be lost. They are doing more than they can. This is the Republic of Turkey, everything will come out,’ he said.
