Baklava is a crispy puff pastry, which is filled with walnuts, hazelnuts or pistachios. It is one of the most typical and traditional Turkish desserts. It is prepared in different sizes and with different fillings. Here is one of the simplest recipes (with filo pastry) for making baklava.
Ingredients (for 15-20 people):
- 450 g baklava filo pastry
- 250 g ground walnuts
- 200 g melted butter
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon (optional)
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
For the syrup:
- 200 g sugar
- 200 ml water
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon (optional)
Preparation:
To prepare the syrup, put 200 g of sugar and 200 ml of water in a saucepan and boil for 20 minutes. Add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and boil for another 10 minutes. Then add 2 teaspoons of cinnamon, turn off the heat and leave to cool.
Grease a baking dish with a little butter. Place 2 sheets of filo pastry in the bottom of the dish, spread a spoonful of melted butter on top of the filo pastry and pour 2 spoonfuls of a mixture of ground walnuts, brown sugar and cinnamon on top.
Repeat this step, placing layer upon layer, until all the filo pastry is finished.
Then cut the baklava into small squares with a knife, and spread the melted butter that has been left over on top.
Preheat the oven to 180 ºC and bake the baklava for 20-25 minutes until golden brown on top.
Then place the baklavas in a serving dish and pour the syrup over them. Bake for at least 3-4 hours, although it is preferable to let it stand for at least a day. It is better if the baklavas are warm and the syrup is cold.
Finally, place the baklavas on a serving dish and sprinkle the ground walnuts on top: now, they are ready to eat.
Enjoy!
