A young couple ended up at the police station in Adana, southern Turkey, after the man faked a crime in front of his girlfriend to ask her to marry him, in an unusual action that alerted several people who watched the whole scene with fear, and alerted the authorities.
News agencies reported that the unusual incident took place in the Çukurova district, on the outskirts of the city of Adana, when Şakir Karakaya, a 29-year-old who works at a driving school, organised with the complicity of several friends a mock scene to propose to Nazlı Gümüş, a 26-year-old woman who is his work colleague and has been his girlfriend since childhood, and who had no suspicions about the preparations.
While the two were with some friends in the Topalak area, on the banks of the nearby Seyhan Dam, a friend of Şakir’s with his head covered with a helmet approached Şakir’s car on a motorbike and, feigning an argument, pretended to fire at him several shots (which turned out to be firecrackers thrown on the ground) amid the screams of Nazlı and her friends and the surprise of the rest of the bystanders, who watched the scene in disbelief from afar.
Şakir, pretending to be seriously injured and throwing a red liquid on his clothes to simulate blood, lay down behind the car; the girl (who is wearing an orange dress in the video), in a state of shock, then approached to try to help him amid cries of anguish when, at that moment, she was surprised by a marriage proposal by Şakir who, on his knees, offered her an engagement ring.
The police showed up and took them to the police station.
The young woman, still in shock, finally said ‘yes’; but the other people who observed the tense scene immediately called 112 – even though some of the couple’s friends signalled to them that nothing was wrong – and several police officers arrived at the scene, thinking that a real crime had occurred.
Despite attempts by the couple and their friends to explain to the officers that it was all a ‘prank‘ and that no crime had occurred, they were briefly detained and taken to the police station in the nearby Yüzüncüyıl neighbourhood for questioning. After completing his statement, the young man told the press outside the police station that he and Nazlı had been in a relationship for 14 years but the girl had never wanted to get married. “She wanted adrenaline, so I prepared this plan…. We acted so well, that people around must have thought it was real and reported it,” the young man said. “It was a bad thing, but this was something I had always dreamed of. I’m so happy, and I said ‘yes’,” she confessed.
