A devastating fire has completely destroyed an entire island in Turkey. The island of Çiçek, located in the Turkish province of Izmir off the coast of the Seferihisar district, was completely reduced to ashes by the flames.
As reported by the İHA news agency, the fire broke out on the night of 16 June in a treeless area of the island, and quickly spread, covering the entire surface of the territory. After local residents alerted the authorities, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry sent several firefighting teams to the area, but they were unable to prevent the flames from completely consuming the island.
Images obtained from the island showed a rabbit fleeing in terror from the fire, while many citizens in Turkey have expressed their sadness at the deaths of numerous animals living on the island due to the fire. At this stage there are no exact figures, but the Turkish authorities have confirmed that much of the island’s wildlife – mainly rabbits – has died directly or indirectly due to the fire, as corroborated by footage taken on the ground.
