Press in Turkey and around the world are heaping praise on Real Madrid’s young Turkish star Arda Güler this morning after Milli Takım‘s emphatic win yesterday in their Euro 2024 Group F qualifier against Georgia. The Turkish national team won with goals from Mert Müldür (24′), Arda Güler (64′) and Kerem Aktürkoglu (96′), while Georgia’s only goal was scored by Georges Mikautadze (31′).
It was Güler, however, with his magnificent goal and his performance during what was otherwise described as the most exciting match of the competition so far, who stole the limelight and the praise from the media inside and outside Turkey. The young player, who has had injury problems during his first season at Real Madrid, showed in the match against Georgia in Germany that he is in top form and still has plenty of magic in his boots to show.
“Arda Güler has made history”
“Arda Güler has made history with the national team,” headlined NTV Spor last night, recalling that the young promise became yesterday the youngest player in the history of the Turkish national football team to score a goal at the European Championship. The Turkish sports portal underlined that with his goal against Georgia, Arda Güler has overtaken Cristiano Ronaldo to become the youngest player in the history of the UEFA Euro to score a goal in his first match. Ronaldo did it just 20 years ago when he was 19 years and 128 days old, while Güler has done it at the age of 19 years and 114 days.

“Turkish Messi announces himself”
Outside Turkey, newspapers such as The Guardian headlined “Arda Guler brings the thunder” in its edition last night after the match. “Oh, what fun we had. What noise there was, what emotion, what an occasion. Played in a fittingly epic biblical storm, water cascading off the Westfalenstadion roof, Euro 2024’s best night was a wild, wonderful open match that had 103 attacks, 36 shots, three strikes that hit the woodwork, and four goals,” wrote Sid Lowe.
Meanwhile, BBC Sports headlined “Turkish Messi announces himself’ – young stars shining at Euro 2024“. And quoting former Wales captain Ashley Williams‘ comments on Arda Güler’s performance with Turkey on BBC One, he said: “An incredible goal. We spoke about this being a chance to announce himself on the major tournament scene and boy did he do that.”
