Turkey sealed its place in the last 16 of the UEFA Euro 2024 after an agonising finale as the Milli Takım beat the Czech Republic 2-1 to finish second in Group F, led by Portugal.
The Czech Republic, having taken just one point from their two previous matches, looked to have the toughest chance of progressing to the last 16, while Turkey relied only in themselves after their 3-1 win over Georgia. The Czechs, however, made things more difficult for themselves after just 20 minutes when Antonín Barák was sent off for a second yellow card, leaving them with a man down.
After a goalless first half in which the Turks imposed their dominance on the game, just six minutes into the second half Turkey’s captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu made the 1-0. Tomáš Souček equalised in the 66th minute of the match, but the Turks continued to attack their opponents’ goal.
However, despite dominating the game and having the numerical advantage, the Turks could not finish the game off and it was only in stoppage time that Cenk Tosun popped up to score four minutes into stoppage time.
There was still time for yet another red card, this time for Tomáš Chorý, when several Czech Republic players got into a tense confrontation with the Turks at the end of the game. A sad farewell for the Czechs.
In this way, Turkey continued with its usual tradition of “last minute” victories and progressed to the last 16 of the Euro 2024, where they will face Austria.
