Cappadocia, one of Turkey‘s most popular tourist regions, has been full of Turkish tourists who are visiting its fairy chimneys and underground cities or taking a balloon tour to take advantage of the long holidays for the Feast of the Sacrifice, one of the most important festivities in the Muslim calendar.
According to the Turkish news agency DHA, quoting sources from the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, tourist accommodation and hotels in Cappadocia are at 70% occupancy these days due to the influx of visitors, especially Turkish citizens who take advantage of the 9 days of national holidays to do activities such as hot air balloon tours, cycling or horse riding, hiking, visits to museums like Göreme or tours of emblematic places like the Ihlara Valley, famous for containing dozens of rock churches with impressive Byzantine frescoes.
“We wanted to spend the holidays in Cappadocia. Spending the holidays in this fascinating atmosphere in Cappadocia is a unique experience. It is something really incredible. I think everyone should go up in a balloon and admire the scenery,” Sıla Çağlar, a Turkish tourist from Adana – in southern Turkey – told the agency.
Cappadocia is a region that spans several provinces in central Anatolia, although most of its attractions are located in the province of Nevşehir; declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its landscapes of wind-sculpted fairy chimneys, its rock-hewn churches carved into the rock by early Christians and its mysterious underground cities built thousands of years ago, attract thousands of tourists from all over the world every year.
