The Municipality of Aksaray, a town in Turkey’s historic Cappadocia region, has inaugurated a spectacular glass terrace over the famous Ihlara Valley, the second longest canyon in the world, during a ceremony attended by several important authorities including Turkey’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy.
The new glass terrace aims to become a new tourism landmark for the region, highlighting the natural and historical beauty of this iconic Cappadocia valley and attracting new tourists, as Ersoy said at the inauguration: ‘The Ihlara glass terrace and café project will allow us to look down on the Ihlara Valley, one of the longest canyons in the world, and reveal from above the breathtaking beauties of its nature’.
‘The Ihlara Valley is one of the most beautiful places in our country, thanks to its historical and natural beauty. With every step you take into the depths of the valley, you pass through the remains of the civilisations that have lived here throughout history. There are 105 churches (carved into the rock) here; you can also cross the valley by crossing the Melendiz River. The glass terrace will allow us to see these unique beauties more closely, offering an unforgettable experience to our visitors,’ the minister said.
The new glass terrace has a total area of about 150 square metres and is built on one of the best places to view the valley in its full perspective. In addition, a visitor reception centre with a car park and a cafeteria has been built next to the terrace.
The ruins of the Ihlara Valley, which include dozens of churches – many of them decorated with impressive mosaics – and other buildings carved centuries ago into the valley walls, are visited every year by a million tourists, who will now have the opportunity to admire this impressive site in Cappadocia from a new and different perspective. According to the Turkish minister, about 2,000 people are expected to visit the glass terrace every day.
