Turkey has started mass production of the Altay, its domestically produced fourth-generation tank based on the South Korean K2 Black Panther, the chairman of the Defence Industry Agency announced to Turkish television station TRT Haber.
‘We have started mass production of our national tank. There are countries that want to work with us on it internationally, and we are continuing our negotiations with them,’ Haluk Görgün said. ‘Many subsystems have been added, technologies have been upgraded, and innovations have been included to improve its combat capabilities,’ explained Görgün, who stressed that the new tank has incorporated many new features thanks to the experience gained by the Turkish Armed Forces in real combat operations.
‘Digital technologies have been increasingly integrated into the Altay, enabling more accurate and faster detection, targeting and engagement capabilities against enemy targets,’ Görgün added. The Altay armoured tank’s fire control system includes technologies such as a laser range finder (LRF) and an advanced image stabilisation system, which enables it to detect and engage targets accurately at long distances.
The first prototype of the Altay battle tank was publicly unveiled more than a decade ago, and a year ago it was announced that testing would begin before series production; although much of the project has been carried out with national designs and technology, the new Turkish tank will initially be powered by South Korean engines and transmissions, with a domestically produced engine to follow in 2026. Several of Turkey’s allies have already expressed interest in the project.
