An amazing incident on a Turkish Airlines flight has forced a plane on a route between Istanbul and Athens to turn back because of a cat that appeared in the cabin, Turkish media reported citing sources from the Anatolia news agency.
The incident, which occurred on board flight TK 1843, apparently took place when the plane – a Boeing 777-300 with a capacity of about 400 passengers – had left the terminal after completing the boarding of all passengers, and was already heading towards the runway; it was at that moment when several passengers noticed a cat walking calmly in the aisle of the cabin. After alerting the crew, they immediately informed the pilot, who contacted the Istanbul Airport Air Traffic Control Centre requesting permission to cancel the take-off and return to the terminal.
Once the take-off was cancelled and the aircraft had returned to its initial parking position, the cabin crew was able to verify that the cat belonged to one of the passengers on board of the flight, who had taken his pet on board without the relevant reservation and without paying the corresponding fee, and that was not carrying the animal in a carrier; further enquiries revealed that the cat had been smuggled onto the aircraft inside a cabin suitcase so that it would go unnoticed.
The flight was able to continue as normal after the captain ordered the passenger – and his cat – to disembark the plane, but following the amazing incident Turkish Airlines has banned the passenger – who has reportedly made similar attempts in the past – from boarding on its planes.
