Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey in 2023, the new Istanbul Airport has increased the number of airlines operating at its facilities to 100 with the recent addition of Air China, making the international airport in the Turkish metropolis the third largest in the world for number of airlines operating in its facilities.
The ceremony to welcome Air China as the 100th airline to operate at Istanbul Airport took place on Friday coinciding with the airline’s first flight between Beijing and Istanbul. During the event, Selahattin Bilgen, vice president of the İGA consortium that operates the airport, recalled that since its inauguration in 2019, Istanbul Airport has grown from operating with 61 airlines to the current 100. Bilgen added that 4 Chinese airlines currently operate flights at the airport, which will contribute to strengthening trade, tourism and diplomatic ties with the Asian giant, and announced that the goal for 2024 is to add another 4 airlines to Istanbul Airport, which will thus become the largest in the world by number of airlines.
