9 of the 22 people arrested in connection with the crime of Narin Güran, the eight-year-old girl murdered in a village in the southeastern Turkish province of Diyarbakır after she was reported missing on 21 August, have been sent to the local criminal court with arrest warrants, including the girl’s mother, brother and cousins.
Turkish media reported late Thursday that of the 22 people arrested so far in connection with the crime for whom a court decision was still pending (another was released this week, and the confessed man who hid the body in the river – Nevzat Bahtiyar – was already imprisoned), once the interrogation proceedings before the prosecutor’s office were completed, 10 were finally released while 3 others were released but under judicial control, being obliged to report regularly to the court.
For the remaining 9 suspects, the prosecution issued a request to the court for their imprisonment for complicity in the crime; among these 9 suspects are the girl’s mother, Yüksel Güran, 44 years old, and her older brother Enes Güran, 18 years old, who had already been arrested at the beginning of the search for Narin when teeth marks were discovered on his arm. Both are reportedly accused of complicity in the charge of premeditated murder, which currently is charged against the child’s uncle, Salim Güran, who has been remanded in custody since 2 September as the main suspect.
In addition, the suspects for whom a detention order has now been issued also reportedly include at least two of Narin’s cousins – Muhammet Kaya and Birsan Güran, the latter the son of the girl’s uncle, Salim Güran – and an aunt, Maşallah Güran, wife of Salim Güran; other members of Narin’s family who are from now being held in prison by court order include her uncles Fuat Güran and Mehmet Kaya.
Another sister of Narin died in strange circumstances
The remaining two persons are reportedly two employees of the main suspect, Salim Güran (the murdered girl’s uncle), who have been identified as Mehmet Selim Atasoy and Ramazan Atasoy. All of them are charged with complicity in Narin Güran’s crime or destruction of evidences.
While the Diyarbakır prosecutor’s office continues its investigation into the murder, media in Turkey are publishing information about the victim’s family saying that Narin Güran had another sister, Tülin, who died in 2009 at the age of 5 after falling down a flight of stairs in strange circumstances: no autopsy was performed then due to pressure from the muhtar (village chief), her uncle Salim.
