Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is attending today the Madrid Conference on Palestine, which is also attended by several representatives of Arab and European countries, with the aim of moving towards a two-state solution for the region that would put an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The meeting in the Spanish capital brings together members of the so-called Arab-Islamic Contact Group for Gaza – which includes countries such as Turkey, Egypt, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez received the Turkish foreign minister and the other participants in person at his official residence in the Moncloa Palace, accompanied by Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, according to Turkish and international media.
The meeting will also be attended by the foreign ministers of Norway and Slovenia and the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, with whom Fidan plans to meet during his stay in Madrid.
In the Spanish capital, the Turkish foreign minister will defend the need to increase pressure on Israel – including actions such as joining the charge of genocide brought before the International Court of Justice in The Hague – to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and the uninterrupted and unconditional delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian civilian population.
Turkey also calls for more countries to recognise the Palestinian state and for Palestine to become a full member of the United Nations in order to move towards a two-state solution in the Middle East to put an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
