More than 500 people were reportedly killed today in an Israeli shelling of the Baptist Hospital in the Gaza Strip, the Turkish news agency Anatolia reported, citing sources of the Palestinian territory’s health ministry. “We cannot cope with the huge number of dead and wounded. Most of the victims are women and children who were sleeping in the hospital. We foresee more shelling of hospitals, there is nowhere safe in Gaza,” said Husam Abu Safeya, a doctor working in the north of the Strip.
Images from the site showed dozens of bodies in the rubble, and hundreds more victims may still be buried under the wreckage of the building. Most of the dead are wounded who were being treated at the hospital, but also Palestinian civilians left homeless by Israeli shelling, as many are housed in schools or hospitals in Gaza. “What is taking place is a genocide. We call on the international community to intervene immediately to stop this massacre. The silence is already unacceptable,” Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said in a statement, declaring three days of mourning for the tragedy. The army of Israel, meanwhile, said it was “still investigating” the incident.
