At least 750 Israeli citizens, including soldiers and civilians, remain missing since the unprecedented offensive launched yesterday by the armed Islamist group Hamas from the Gaza Strip, which included the firing of more than 5,000 rockets into Israel and a ground incursion in which armed Palestinian militants seized several Israeli towns near Gaza: an operation that has so far left more than 600 dead on the Israeli side, according to the latest reports, while more than 310 Palestinians have died since the start of the offensive.
The number of missing Israelis was reported by the Jerusalem Post newspaper, which cited an unofficial report. However, several Palestinian groups including the so-called Al-Qassam Brigades – the armed wing of Hamas – claimed yesterday to have captured several Israeli soldiers, and numerous videos of captured Israeli soldiers and civilians being paraded through the streets of Gaza appeared on the social networking site X/Twitter. “We have captured many Zionist soldiers, who are now our prisoners,” said Abu Hamza, spokesman for the Saraya al-Quds Brigades, the armed wing of Islamic Jihad.
